Expanders

A common tool used in orthodontic treatment is orthodontic expanders. This treatment helps to widen the jaw and create more space for teeth. Often this treatment will be required for those who have narrow dental arches or crowded teeth. They are also used for those with crossbites, where the upper and lower teeth do not align properly during biting. Orthodontic expanders are typically used in growing children and adolescents when the jaw is still in its developmental stage.

There are a few different designs for expanders. Some widen the palate quickly and are activated by the patient or parent placing a key into a screw mechanism that connects the two halves of the expander. Other expanders are designed to provide a slower widening on their own and are activated by the orthodontist. The palate is made up of two bones that meet in the middle. Expansion occurs by applying pressure to separate the bones of the palate and allowing bone to be generated to fill in the space generated between the bones. This is known as a skeletal expansion. The bones of the palate begin to fuse at puberty and continue to fuse into adulthood, after which, if a skeletal expansion is needed there would have to be a surgical procedure done to free up the bones first.

Orthodontic expanders go beyond cosmetic improvements and help to address fundamental issues related to jaw alignment and oral health. In order to determine if orthodontic expanders can help your child, they need to be seen by an orthodontist. To book a consultation with Dr. Visconti, please contact us.
