Taking proper care of your braces matter. Not only can it prevent unnecessary repairs, but it also reduces the likelihood of discomfort or irritation that can occur due to broken brackets or wires. So how can you best care for your braces? Here are some tips to guide you:

BRUSH PROPERLY

Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and toothpaste to gently clean around the brackets, wires, and gumline. Brush multiple times a day, particularly after eating. Angle the brush towards the gumline and brush in circulate motions to remove debris.

FLOSS REGULARLY

Flossing may be more challenging with braces, but it’s very important. You can use special floss threaders to help you navigate around wires to clean between your teeth and the brackets. Ask your orthodontist what tools are out there that are right for you.

EAT PROPERLY

Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can lead to damage. Remember it’s very important to steer clear of foods like popcorn, nuts, hard candy, or chewing gum. Hard fruits like apples should be sliced before eating. Whatever you do, do not chew ice. It is one of the most common causes of brace damage.

USE PROTECTIVE GEAR

If you play sports or engage in activities where your mouth may be at risk of injury, use a mouthguard. This will protect your braces and reduce the chance of damage during games or physical activities.
